Hernandez (Ward 5) || Vazquez (Mayor) || Amezcua (Mayor) || Non-Citizen Voting
Although this measure is well-intentioned, it can lead to unforeseen consequences. As an undocumented immigrant who has lived here for over 20 years, I know the hurdles we face in our daily lives. Unfortunately, this measure will lead to huge budget deficits, make our city vulnerable to special interest groups and burden future councils.
Higher water and trash rates and higher taxes
The City of Santa Ana would be forced to pay on its own millions of dollars in litigation, plus over $400,000 every two years. It would lead to higher water and trash rates and taxes. Santa Ana already has the highest taxes in Orange County.
It’s an additional burden for the poorest among us
Higher prices and taxes directly affect the lowest income households who can barely make it to the end of the month. How many new poor people are we willing to create for this proposal?
Unwanted people votes count as much as yours
Our children, the children of our children and the children of our children’s children will pay so that rapists, child molesters, child support evaders and perpetrators of domestic violence can cast their vote.
We are risking to lose the City sanctuary status
Special interest groups will take the city into uncharted areas that may conflict with established values and past achievements, including the loss of the City sanctuary status.
Santaneros will find that their vote is diluted by the influx of people from other cities who come just to vote: California does not require voters to present photo ID to vote. Therefore it is impossible to tell if a person is from Santa Ana, Anaheim or Garden Grove, or if they have lived in Santa Ana for a week or 20 years.
Cities that allow noncitizens to vote include San Francisco and Oakland. Santa Ana deserves better and should not go the way of decadent cities like these.
As neighbors, we are still fully represented by our council members. You must not be discriminated against because of your migratory status or tax paying situation.
It puts migratory statuses in jeopardy
When people fill out the forms to further their migratory status, they are asked “Have you voted in a National, State or Local election?” and the applicant must say yes if he/she did so. Many Officers would simply deny and stop the process by assuming that the applicant voted in other than a Local election.
Lieing and saying no in the form will haunt them later because their name will be in the City’s database.
Santa Ana supports our immigrant residents and the traditions of immigrant communities, families, and businesses. But we must assess the importance of protecting neighborhoods, cleaning and fixing our streets, and picking up trash.
We ask you to vote NO on measure ____. We deserve a city that is safe, fiscally sound, and serves all residents without burning millions of dollars for new bureaucracy at the expense of public safety and essential city services.
This is NOT a gubernamental site
This website is made by neighbors and its only intent is to facilitate the voice of Santaneros toward the city.
